التراث مفهوم حديث.. يمثّل كتلة كبيرة من الأعمال العائدة إلى الأزمنة العربية الماضية والتي كان للإسلام فيها إسهام معنوي كبير.. من هنا يبدأ، عندنا، ربط المخزون الفكري العائد إلى الأزمنة الماضية بمرجعيّة هي المرجعيّة الدينية. فلا يعود التراث، ضمن هذا الفهم، مجرّد خزان ضخم لأعمال كتّاب من الماضي يتمّ التعامل معه بالعقل، بل يتحوّل إلى مخزون معنوي هائل يُستثمر في تجييش المشاعر، وأحياناً العصبيّات.
فالتراث، كما سنرى لاحقاً في صفحات هذا الكتاب، موقف ذهني متكامل من الآخر ومن العالم، يختلف من بُنية اجتماعية إلى أخرى، ويتمتع بوظيفة محدَّدة تنبع من رؤية أشمل تخدم هذا الموقف. علماً أن الموقف والوظيفة يتناسقان في ما بينهما على المستوى الداخلي من ناحية، ويتميّزان، بحدّة أو برفق، أو حتى بعصبيّة، عن العالم الخارجي من ناحية أخرى".
