هذا الكتاب بحث يستهدف الإجابة على سؤالين الأول منهما هل كان الكوفيون معللين في كل دراستهم للغة؟ فإذا لم يكونوا كذلك ، علينا ان نحدد تلك الجوانب التى لم يتعللوا فيها . مستبعدين منها ما لحقها من شبهة التعليل إن كانت هناك شبهة. أما الثاني فهو الجوانب التى تعللوا فيها ، فعلينا أن نحدد وسائلهم التى استخدموها في تعليلاتهم، ثم نصنفها تصنيفا منهجيا بوضع كل فئة من تلك الوسائل- من أجل تقييمها - تحت نوع من انواع التفكير الإنساني مسترشدين بنظرية المعرفة عند المحدثين. ونظرا لأن أئمة الكوفيين قد تتلمذوا على يد علماء البضرة ، فمن الوجب إذن دراسة مدى إقتراب هذه الوسائل من مثيلتها عند البصريين وبالتحديد كما نجدها عند سيوية وصحبه في "الكتاب".
