كل باحث في مجال اللغة يعمل أن الكلمة قادرة على أن تكون الرابط بين حقول مختلفة، بل أنها قادرة على ربط حقول من المستحيل الربط بينها، وما يهمنا هنا ليس فقط معرفة أن اللغة يمكنها ذلك، بل– وهذا هو الاهم– كيف يمكن للكلمة ومن جراء ربطها بين حقول المستحيل الربط بينها أن تولد أو تنتج تأثيرا في الواقع، وقد نقترب بهذا الكلام من الحديث عن الفاعلية الرمزية للغة، إلا أن هناك فرقا بين أن ندرس الفاعلية الرمزية للغة من زاوية علم النص الأدبي بما أن الأدب رسالة تصل إلى متلق يفهمها ويستوعبها ومن ثم يتاثر بها، ولا فرق اذا ما درسنا الأدب من هذه الزاوية أن يكون مكتوبا أو منطوقا.
