في لندن ترسو باخرة كبيرة ناصعة البياض, لم تصنع لكي تبحر علي الإطلاق, وإنما لكي يستقلها المشاركون في أحد المؤتمرات, الذي يلتقي فيه الغرب والشرق لمدة أسابيع قبيل أنهيار سوربرلين عام 1989, أستعان "مارك بروسون" في مؤتمره الأخير بخبرته الدبلوماسية ليؤكد لنا أن هذا المبني المصمم علي هيئة سفينة ساكنة سيتحول شيئاً فشيئاً إلي سفينة شراعية للمجانين, وتؤكد المشاهد علي طول الرواية أن السفينة تنحرق يميناً تارة ويساراً تارة أخري, ولكنها مع نهاية الرواية سترسو علي أحد المواني بالتأكيد, ولكن لا يستطيع أحد أن يتكهن أين سترسو؟ّ!.
