يتعرض هذا الكتاب لسيرة هيجل الذي يعد أشهر فلاسفة العقل البشري على الإطلاق وكيف إستطاع أن يشكل نسقاً فلسفياً متكاملاً سماه(نسق العالم) يشتمل على المنطق والطبيعة والروح والعقل، وكيف كان ينتمي إلى المدرسة المثالية بأسبقية الفكرة على المادة، ولولا منهجه الجدلي(الجدل وإستمرار الصراع بين النقائض) الذي فتن به معاصريه ومن بعدهم لما توصل الفيلسوف والسياسي الألماني كارل ماركس إلى صياغة نظريته الماركسية وتطبيقاتها الشيوعية، التي إختطفت نصف الكرة الأرضية ردحاً من الزمن فيما عرف بالكتلة الشرقية.. ويكفي أن ماركس قد إعترف بتأثره بهيجل ورفضه لمحاولات خصومه النيل منه عندما أطلق مقولته الشهيرة:(هناك مجموعة من الأدعياء تصف هيجل بالكلب الميت، لذا حان الوقت لكي أعلن أنِّي لست إلا تلميذاً لذلك الكلب الميت). ويروي هذا الكتاب جوانب مهمة وشيقة ومثيرة من حياة هذا الفيلسوف العبقري وفلسفته ومواقفه من الأديان، خاصة اليهودية والإسلام، والأخلاق والحياة والسياسة والدولة والمجتمع والمرأة والحب.
