وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم للطلاب تمارين لممارسة معظم مهارات التفكير الأساسية العشرين، المحددة من قبل الجمعية الأمريكية للإشراف وتطوير المناهج في كتابها "أبعاد التفكير" (1987)، ويتم إكتساب هذه المهارات بإستخدام محتوى المعلومات من الرياضيات، واللغة، والدراسات الإجتماعية والعلوم.
هذا المحتوى للمنهاج المدرسي يجب أن يساعد الطلاب على ملاحظة إرتباط مهارات التفكير عند دراسة محتوى كل من هذه المواضيع، كما يجب أن يتمكن المعلمين للتأكد مما إذا كان الطلاب قد قاموا بإجراء عمليات ربط ذات معنى وإبداع بين المفاهيم الأساسية في مواضيع المناهج المختلفة هذه في ست إلى ثمان سنوات المدرسية الأولى لهم.
