مع إطلالة الألفية الثالثة من التاريخ الميلادى، انتهت حقبة الألفية الثانية التى امتدت من عام 1000 وحتى عام 2000 والتى عجت بالأحداث والحروب ونشوء امبراطوريات وسقوط أيديولوجيات وانهيار حضارات وتشكل عالم جديد تميز بالاكتشافات العلمية والجغرافية وكانت هذه الفترة شديدة الأهمية فى تاريخنا فقد شهدت متابعة الطفرة الحضارية الإسلامية العلمية والثقافية فى المشرق الإسلامى والمغرب العربى ثم انحسارها وسقوط الأندلس والحروب الصليبية وغزوات المغول وانشاء حضارة مغولية إسلامية وبروز قوة أوروبا والصهيونية العالمية والاستعمار الأوروبى واحتلال فلسطين كما شهدت تشكل الإمبراطورية العثمانية وفتوحاتها فى الأراضى الأوروبية ثم انهيارها. وتميزت بعصور التنوير الأوروبية واكتشاف أمريكا، وكذلك بالحروب العالمية، وتراجع الدور العربى والإسلامى الذى مهر الألفية الأولى. ليفسح المجال للدور الأوروبى ثم الأمريكى. لم تكن الغاية بالطبع الإلمام (بكل) الشخصيات التى مرت وأثرت فى الألفية الثانية التى مضت، فهذا ليس المجال ولا الهدف.
ولم تكن هناك مساحة جغرافية نتحرك فيها، بل كان العالم كله من اليابان والصين والهند والشرق الآسيوى إلى الشمال الروسى والجنوب الآسيوى والأفريقى والغرب الأوروبى والأمريكى مرورا بآسيا الإسلامية حتى مملكة الفطانى الإسلامية فى تايلاند وملكاتها الملونات، وإيران/ فارس والصرب والبوسنة وألبانيا وتركيا وتكوين أفغانستان إلى نيجيريا وكل أفريقيا وحتى الأبورجين فى استراليا، كانوا جميعا ضمن دائرة الاهتمام والبحث هناك عمن ترك بصمة فى أعوام الألف عام من الألفية الثانية، وذلك فى كل المجالات دون تميز، سواء العلمية أو الفنية أو السياسية أو النضالية أو التاريخية أو الأدبية، وقد راعينا فى هذه الموسوعة الصغيرة الموجزة التركيز على الغريب فى الشخصيات المعروفة وعدم الاسترسال فى السرد حتى لا يفقد العمل غايته والتى هى فى الأساس (التعريف السريع) ببعض شخصيات الألفية الثانية بما يتلاءم مع إيقاع العصر اللاهث الذى لم يعد يحتمل الإطالة والإسهاب.
