الخطاب الديني التكفيري في نصوصه وأحكامه والدعوة إلى تجديده على أسس عصرية نهضوية، والخروج من المأزق الحضاري للأمة الإسلامية، هو ما يدور الحديث عنه في كتاب الشيخ دياب المهداوي "آراء علماء الإسلام في التكفير"، اعتنى بتحقيق الكتاب ورفده بمقدمة الدكتور الشيخ أحمد محمد قيس الذي اعتبر "الكتاب وما تضمنه من معلومات قيّمة وهامة، مساهمة من جملة المساهمات التي قام بها هؤلاء العلماء في سبيل خدمة الدين الحنيف.
يرتكز الكتاب على فكرة مفادها أنه لا يجوز أن يكفر المسلم المسلم ولو اختلف معه في بعض المسائل الدينية الناشئة عن الخلاف في فهم النص من القرآن الكرمي أو السُّنَّة النبوية الشريفة.
من هنا، جاء هذا الكتاب، خلاصة لأقوالٍ وآراء علماء الإسلام على إختلاف مذاهبهم ومشاربهم على أنه "كل من قال لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فهو مسلم حرام دمه وماله وعرضه ويزوّج، وإذا مات يدفن في مقابر المسلمين، وتجري عليه أحكام الإسلام".
يتألف الكتاب من أربعة فصول جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: الفصل الأول: "إدانة تكفير أهل القبلة على لسان سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم والذرائع الباطلة لتكفير المسلمين"، الفصل الثاني: "حفظ آثار الأنبياء عليهم السلام والسلف الصالح في قبورهم وبيوتهم وما يمت إليهم بصلة"، الفصل الثالث: "تعريف مفهوم التكفير ووجوب الإحتياط به عند علماء الإسلام، وعدم التسرع في إتهام الآخرية، وتعريف التكفير من منظار القرآن الكريم والسُّنة المطهّرة وآل البيت عليهم السلام والصحابة الكرام والتابعين رضي الله عنهم"، الفصل الرابع: "ذكر أقوال علماء السلف في القرون الثلاثة الأولى في مخالفة تكفير المسلمين".
