وفقاً للكتابات المقدسة اليهودية، التي أصبحت تعرف بالكتاب المقدس العبري، ينحدر اليهود شعب إسرائيل القديم الذي استقر في أرض كنعان الواقعة بين الساحل الشرقي للبحر الأبيض المتوسط ونهر الأردن 1451 قبل الميلاد إلى اصول مشتركة من نسل إبراهيم وابنه إسحاق وابنه يعقوب، وهؤلاء هم العبرانيون الذي تركزت تنقلاتهم حول الخليل في ما بين عامي 1991 و 1706 قبل الميلاد، ويبدو أن هذا هو ما دعاهم إلى إنشاء الحرم الإبراهيمي في الخليل ليكون مكان دفن موتاهم.
ويتكون بنو إسرائيل من اثني عشر قبيلة تنحدر كل منها من ابن من أبناء يعقوب الإثني عشر: روبين وشمعون ولاوي ويهوذا وياساكر وزفولون ودان وجاد ونفتالي وعشير ويوسف وبنيامين.
يؤكد الكتاب المقدس أن يعقوب وأبناءه الإثنا عشر تقريباً تركوا كنعان في خضم مجاعة شديدة واستقروا في جاسان في شمال مصر.
ومجمل القول إن حاخامات اليهود وجدوا أن أحسن طريقة يمكن إتباعها لربط تاريخهم بأقدم العصور، ولجعل عصر اليهود متصلاً بأقدم الأزمنة هو إستعمال مصطلح عبري للدلالة على اليهود بوجه عام وبذلك يصبح تاريخ فلسطين تاريخاً واحداً متصلاً ومرتبطاً، منذ أقدم العصور بالشعب اليهودي.
إن بني إسرائيل من الناحية القومية مرحلة متقدمة عن المرحلة الموسوية، واليهودية كديانة هم أمة موسى عليه السلام وكتابهم التوراة وهو أول كتاب نزل من السماء، أعني أنه ما كان ينزل على إبراهيم وغيره من الأنبياء، ما كان يسمى كتاباً، بل صحفاً، وهم دُعوا يهوداً من يهوذا أحد الأسباط الإثني عشر: (يهوذا).
