عرض المؤلف مراحل تطور علم اللغة سائرًا علي النهج ذاته الذي اتبعه في الجزء الأول ولكنه هنا كان أكثر تفصيلًا ومناقشة ونقدًا للأفكار والقضايا والاتجاهات اللغوية منذ سنة 1970م حتى سنة 1986 وقد اعتمد المؤلف هنا أيضًا على كم غير عادي من المراجع المهمة بلغاتها الأصلية المختلفة وهو ما يدل علي إحاطة غير عادية بأدوات البحث اللغوي وتعمق شديد في نظرياته وتصوراته على نحو مغاير للمداخل الأخري إلى علم اللغة.
وقد توقف عند النحو التحويلي التوليدي في الكتاب الأول ثم استكمل الرصد في الكتاب الثاني فبدأ بالاتجاه التواصلي- البراجماتي وهو ما يزال أحدث اتجاه لغوي معاصر وأكثر تأثيرًا في الدرس اللغوي وأعقبه بالاتجاهات الأخرى فهو مرجع أساسي لا يمكن الاستغناء عنه وفي رأيي لم يكن من المستساغ أن أترجم الأحداث وأترك الأساس الأرسخ والأعمق.
