شهدت فلسفة العلوم على امتداد هذا القرن تطورات علمية مهمة ابتداءً من ظهور كتابات الوضعية المنطقية، وردود فعل كارل بوبر، خاصة تحليلاته النقدية لمبدأ التحقيق، مروراً بتكريس فكر بوبري انطلاقاً من مبدأ التكذيب، وصولاً غلى فكرة النموذج عند توماس كون، كما ظهرت من مؤلفه "تركيب الثورات العلمية"، ومدى ما تمثله هذه الفكرة من تصور لابستمولوجيا العلم. وما ترتب على هذا من ظهور فكرة برامج البحث العلمي عند أمري لاكاتوش الذي استطاع بتحليلاته العقلانية النقدية المدعومة بنظرة تاريخية، أن يوظف الفكرة بصورة جديدة لتتسق مع واقع ابستمولوجيا علمية جديدة يتطلع إليها الفكر العلمي.
ومع أن لاكاتوش يهتم بأساساً بمناقشة برامج البحث العلمي، إلا أنه يجعل كارل بوبر ومبدأ قابلية التكذيب المدخل الطبيعي لبرامج البحث العلمي، وعل اعتبار أن فكرة كارل بوبر عن مبدأ قابلية التكذيب تعد بداية التاريخ لفلسفة العلوم في تطورها المعاصر الذي صدر منذ العقد الثالث من القرن الحالي. ومبدأ قابلية التكذيب عند كارل بوبر، يأتي بمثابة البديل الطبيعي الذي يسلم بقابلية الخطأ وهو على نقيض مبدأ التحقيق، الذي ذهبت إليه حركة الوضعية المنطقية من صورتها الأولى، أو المـاخرة بكل ما تضمنه من تعديلات، ومبدأ التحقيق يضع في اعتباره دائماً اكتشاف الحالات الموجبة.
أما مبدأ التكذيب فيعتمد دائماً على الرفض المتكرر للنظريات، ويعتمد على الأساس الإبريقي ولا يخاف النقد، بل ويعترف بالخطأ، ويناقش لاكاتوش بصورة نقدية الأنساق الفكرية المختلفة من فلسفة العلم، ويدعم مناقشاته بأمثلة مستقاة من الأعمال ولا تجارب العلمية للعلماء. وفي هذا الصدد نجد لاكاتوش يستحضر في ذهنه العلم ونظرياته، وأعمال العلماء، حتى المكاتبات الدقيقة بين العلماء التي تشرح فكرة هنا أو هناك، وهو في هذا الصدد يبرهن على قدرته العائقة على تمثل أفكار ونظريات العلم وفلسفة العلم من خلال التاريخ الطويل الذي جمعهما معاً.
