موضوع هذا الكتاب دراسة القضايا الأخلاقية التي أفرزها التقدم الحاصل في ميدان الطب والتكنولوجيا الحيوية، وما يرتبط بها من قضايا أخرى فلسفية وقانونية ودينية واقتصادية وبيئية؛ أما غايته الأساسية فتتمثل في اقتراح المبادئ الأخلاقية التي يجب أن تنظم ممارسة الأطباء والعاملين في ميادين الطب والبيولوجيا والصحة، إلا أن هذه المبادئ تتجاوز المستوى الطبي كي تشكل نواة للتفكير في كيفية تنظيم أخلاقي وقانوني متفق عليه- نسبيًا- للممارسة والبحث العلميين، ولكل الممارسات المهنية بشكل عام؛ بغية تدعيم حقوق الإنسان والحفاظ على بيئته، وحمايته من تجاوزات العلماء والباحثين، لاسيما وأن هذه المبادئ تتعلق بقضايا تهم الجميع مثل صيانة كرامة الإنسان والحفاظ على وحدته وهويته، ومراعاة العدالة والإنصاف، وكذا احترام حق الفرد في الاختيار واستقلاله الذاتي وحقه في تقرير مصيره بنفسه فيما يتعلق بحياته أو موته أو ذاته بشكل عام.
إن ما أفرزته التكنولوجيا الحيوية من قضايا تثير اليوم الكثير من الجدل، ومن ثم يجب أن يترك باب النقاش الدائر مفتوحًا أمام الجميع. وكما أن الحرب من الأهمية بحيث ينبغي ألا تترك للقادة العسكريين وحدهم، فإن أمور الصحة والمرض من الأهمية بحيث يجب ألا تترك للأطباء والفنيين وحدهم، وإذا كان المواطنون- في المجتمعات الديمقراطية- يشاركون في صنع السياسة العامة للدولة التي تتعلق بالسلم والحرب وسيادة القانون والمساواة والعدالة الاجتماعية... إلخ. إذا كان ذلك كذلك، فليس هناك ما يبرر إبعاد الناس عن المشاركة وعلى نحو مشابه في صياغة النتائج المترتبة على التقدم في المجالين الطبي والبيولوجي.
