يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى بيان الصلة بين الفلسفة والطب بالرغم من تباينهما موضوعاً ومنهجاً.
على أننا لا نعنى ببيان الصلة بينهما إعادة الطب- أو اي علم آخر- إلى أحضان الفلسفة، لأننا نؤمن أن استقلال العلوم لا يعنى إطلاقاً طلاقاً بائنا بينهما، وإنما هو كاستقلال الفتاة عن أمها بزواجها فإنه لا يعنى استغناءها عنها، وتكشف الفصول الثلاثة عن علاقات أربع بين الفلسفة والطب، أما الفصل الأول فأساسه مسلمة ألا وهى: إن هناك نسقين متباينين فى العلاج بين الطب القديم القائم على الخبرة المنظمة والذى كان سائداً فى العصور القديمة والوسطى، وبين الطب الحديث المسمى بالطب العلمي التجريبى، يتعلق الفصل الثانى بالصلة بين الطب اليوناني والطب العربي الإسلامى، وقد اقتضت الدراسة ضرورة كشف النقاب عن دور الطب فى مصر القديمة. ولقد اعترف الأطباء فى عصرنا بأهمية دور الفلسفة، فكان أن التمسوا من الأم المحنكة الراي والمشورة بصدد موضوعين -الأول- وهو موضوع الجزء الأول من الفصل الثالث- حين التبس الأمر على الأطباء بصدد مفاهيم بعض المصطلحات المتداولة مثل مفهوم الحياة أما الثانى وهو موضوع الجزء الثانى من الفصل الثالث فيتعلق بالمشكلات الأخلاقية التى أثارها تطور الطب، ولقد شغلت الهندسة الوراثية حيزاً هاماً في موضوع الأخلاق الطبية لما فى إمكان التحكم فى الجينات أو المورثات من إمكانية التحكم فى طفل المستقبل من مخاطر بيولوجية.
وبعد.. لقد كتب الفصلين الأول والثانى الدكتور أحمد صبحى وكتب الدكتور محمود زيدان الفصل الثالث. ولعل القارئ يجد مع اختلاف الموضوعات تكاملاً وتناسقاً فكلها يندرج تحت الدور الذى تقوم به الفلسفة فى مجال الطب.
