هذا الكتاب لا يتناول كل عصور ما قبل التاريخ، حيث نحي جانبا مئات الألوف من السنين السحيقة في القدم رغم ثراء ما بها وجاذبيته، وركز على نشأة المجتمعات الحديثة التي تقرن دوما بالإنسان العاقل، والمشكلة التي يعالجها هذا الكتاب هي: هل تشكل نهاية العصر الحجري القديم الوسيط وبداية العصر الحجري القديم الأعلى نقطة فاصلة بين الإنسان " المبكر" وهو الكائن الذي اندثر تكوينه البيولوجي، وانمحت سلوكياته، والإنسان " البدائي" بمعنى الإنسان " الأول" أي المؤسس للملكات والخصائص الكلية والتوجهات السلوكية التي توارثناها؟ لو اقتصر الأمر على رسم خط فاصل يوضح على يمينه إنسان النياندر وعلى يساره الإنسان العاقل حتى تصبح هناك حدود ملموسة ومفهومة بين الأثنين لهان كل شيء وأصبح ميسورا. غير أن اختصار الأشياء على هذا النحو لا يعطى إجابة شافية السؤال الخاص بالأسس الموضوعية للتطور المفترض وآلياته. ولذا فكل ما يأمل هذا الكتاب عمله هو وصف طبيعة هذا التطور ومحاولة شرح أنماطه وأسبابه.
