يرنو الكتاب إلى ساحات القتال والخسارة حين يُقدم وجهة نظر رومانية مُطلعة لصبي مولود آمناً في أمريكا يحاول أن يستوعب رحلة رهيبة كان من الواجب أن تكون أمريكا هي نهايتها السعيدة. وبأسلوب كلاسيكي على غرار قصص إدجار ألان بو تغوص إحدى القصص المنتمية إلى "المذهب اللاواقعي" في مشاعر الوحشة وصعوبة التخلي عن الأحلام. ومن الكلاسيكية إلى ما بعد الحداثة المعاصرة تصحبنا قصة لا سبيل إلى م يرنو الكتاب إلى ساحات القتال والخسارة حين يُقدم وجهة نظر رومانية مُطلعة لصبي مولود آمناً في أمريكا يحاول أن يستوعب رحلة رهيبة كان من الواجب أن تكون أمريكا هي نهايتها السعيدة. وبأسلوب كلاسيكي على غرار قصص إدجار ألان بو تغوص إحدى القصص المنتمية إلى "المذهب اللاواقعي" في مشاعر الوحشة وصعوبة التخلي عن الأحلام. ومن الكلاسيكية إلى ما بعد الحداثة المعاصرة تصحبنا قصة لا سبيل إلى معرفة موقعها إلى غياهب الموت والفانتازيا. وكما هي عادة البوتقة لن تَعدم قصة جديدة من أفريقيا: كوميدية سوداء تتناول حياة بغي في هراري تحاول إثبات هويتها بطريقة بيروقراطية محضة. لا يخلو الكتاب من قصة مدينية، نسخة عصرية من تناول فيرچينيا ولف وكاثرين مانسفيلد لوجهة نظر الرواة. ومن كندا سوف نجد قصة تعلمنا شيئاً عن معنى الإنسانية، حبكة مليئة بالفقدان والحنين لا تنطوي على وعي أكثر مما ينبغي بأثرها. وبالقرب من مفاعل تشرنوبيل سو نجد قصة تخيم عليها إيماءات هادئة النبرة تليق بتشيكوف وتصوير لشخصيات أشبه بشخصيات نابوكوف. قصة أخرى في كوريا الجنوبية مشعة بالجمال، عن الحرب، عن كل حرب. داخل إحدى مستشفيات القتال يطارد الماضي بطلة يابانية يتيمة أثناء رغبتها الطاغية في عودة رفيق كان كل شيء في حياتها.
