يمكن أن تسمّى التوافقيات برياضيات العدّ. وبتخصيص أكثر، هي رياضيات التعداد والتواجد والبناء والأسئلة المثلى حول المجموعات المنتهية.
تتشابك التوافقيات في الوقت الحاضر مع الرياضيات الحديثة. في الماضي القريب، كان ينظر للتوافيق كمجموعة مفيدة من الأدوات التي تقوم مقام حقول معرفية أخرى. والآن قد تبلورت في إطار متماسك. ومن الجيد أن نرى كيف يمكن أن تستخدم الحقول الأخرى كالتفاضل والتكامل والتحليل ونظرية الأعداد والجبر الخطي والتجريدي هذه الأدوات لحل مسائل توافقية بحتة. يشار إلى أن بعض هذه النتائج قد برزت باعتبارها حقائق رياضية هامة.
