"تدور أحداث الرواية في مجتمع أقرب ما يكون للمجتمع المتخلف حيث يقوم بطل القصة التي يرويها بزيارة سلطان قبلي يقدس الخرافات التي يمثلها الكاهن المقدس عندهم والذي بدوره أضفى القدسية على السلطان، وقد عالج البطل السلطان من مرضه فلما شفي قدمت القرابين للضريح المقدس، ولم يكتف الكاهن بهذه القرابين حتى طلب تقديم ابنة السلطان نفسها حسب طلب الآلهة كما يزعم لتذهب إلى الجبل المقدس فتخدم الآلهة هناك، وقد أنقذها البطل مع صديقه، وأسكناها في كهف، لوما عاد البطل ليخبر أخاها بخدعة الكاهن قبض عليه وحوكم من قبل السلطان والكاهن وبقية زعماء القبيلة ثم قدم للحية المقدسة لكن صديقاً جديداً له من القبيلة أنقذه ثم رافقه ليكتشفوا أخيراً أن الكاهن كان له قصر فخم في الجبل المقدس يجلب إليه الضحايا من بنات القبيلة وهنا قبض عليه وأخذته الجماهير التي جاءت إلى الجبل وقامت بثورتها العارمة على السلطان والكاهن".
