ما إن إنبلج الصبح وبدأت أشعته تخرق أوعية الظلام لينذر بقدوم يوم بؤس جديد من أيام صفر من عام 125 هـ الموافق 21 أغسطس 1834 م حتى تحركت الجحافل الغازية متجهة نحو الجنوب حيث تربض مدينة (خميس مشيط) الحالمة. وكانت الشمس بعد شروقها تسابق القوم على ساحات القتال التي لا يجف فيها دم حتى يسيل دم مسلم آخر. كان عائض بن مرعي قد وصل بقواته التي قدم بها من جبل عسير الليلة الماضية وأخذ في ترتيب الصفوف منذ الصباح الباكر، وأمر أن يبقى عدد من المقاتلين في الحصون لا يغادرونها، بينما يرافقه العدد الآخر من المشاة في الميدان. وكان يقدر جيشه بستة آلاف رجل فقط. إلا أنه يفتقر إلى التنظيم الذي يتمتع به الجيش المصري، وإن كانت الطرابيش الحمر تعلو هامات الكثير من رجال الباشا فإن فخامة اللباس وخيل الكثيرين من رجال عسير ينم عن رجال لا يقللون من أهمية الظهور بمظاهر أكثر أبهة عند اللقاء. أخذ ثابت بيد صاحبه عبد الوهاب وقد إرتفع معيار الحماس في رأسيهما وهما يريان الجيشان وقد أخذ كل منهما مكانه في ساحات القتال، وكانا في نفس الوقت يريان وجوه الكبار وقد تغيرت ألوانها وهم يكبرون ويدعون الله عز وجل بالصبر عند اللقاء والنصر على الأعداء ". في هذه المدينة خميس مشبط تقع أحداث هذه القصة وهي قصة تروي أخبار أناسها الذين تطهرت قلوبهم بالإيمان وتشربت طباعهم بالحب والإخاء والنجدة. وأما الزمان قإن بداية أحداث القصة كانت في العام 1249هـ 1824 م ومقارنة بأحداث المنطقة نفسها فقد كانت على مفترق طرق تاريخية وبداية دولة فتية، دولة أخذت تمد جذورها في تاريخ البلاد. مستقلة حيناً وتابعة لدولة الدركية حيناً آخر. إنها إمارة (آل عائض) الذين بدأت أو إمارتهم بخصوصها (عائض بن مري) الذي تسلمها من إبن عمه (علي بن محبل) بعدما مات في العام 1249 هـ فبنى إمارة آل عائض المعروفة في تاريخ المنطقة. لكن عائضاً لم يهنأ بالإمارة في أيامها الأولى، فقد إنتقض الأمير (أبو عريش) ضده. ومن هنا بدأت رحلة الحرب تتجدد على عسير. وبدأ عائض يقودها بنفسه مرغماً.
