جمع كتاب أ.د. حفناوي رشيد بعلي في قراءته لنصوص (الحداثة وما بعد الحداثة) بين المشاغل النظرية والنقدية للأدب عامة، وبين أعمال روائية وإبداعية (فنية) أخرى منتقاة، ما يؤكد للكتاب قيمته المعرفية والنقدية في حقل الفن السردي القصصي وغيره من فنون الثقافة والإجتماع والتاريخ، وبعبارة أخرى، فإن مدار القراءات في هذا الكتاب تتركز حول "الخطاب النقدي المعاصر" والذي بدأ – وفقاً للمؤلف – يؤسس البداية الجديدة، والتحرر من عقدة "النموذج التراث" ، ومن النزعة الوجدانية، ومن حتميات النقد الإجتماعي والتاريخي، والإنطلاق من "النص وإلى النص"، أي الإنطلاق من داخل بمعزل عن عوامله الخارجية، وبذلك تتأسس الكتابة النقدية الجديدة، بوصفها شهادة ورؤيا جديدة، ويضيف المؤلف: نستطيع القول عموماً أن النقد الجديد، بدأ يأخذ شكلاً جدياً، وإن لم يخلُ من محاولات متعثرة، ظلت تقف عند مرحلة "البلاغة"، والتي اهتمت أكثر بالشكل وصورة الكلام والصياغة. ولذلك بدأ النظر يتوجه لقراءة النتاج الأدبي والفني على أنها نتاجات في ذاتها ... أي قراءة النص من داخله وليس من خارجه.
