هذه دراسة حاولت المؤلفة من خلالها رسم صورة لعبد الرحيم البيساني العسقلاني، المصري (القاضي، الفاضل)، وزير صلاح الدين، ولدوره البارز في أحداث عصره في مصر والشام (أي فلسطين وسوريا ولبنان)، كما حاولت أن تبحث في علاقاته ببعض الوزراء الفاطميين، وقد مهدت له السبيل للقيام بأدوار تاريخية، وجهت بعض أحداث عصره، وأدّت إلى ظهور صلاح الدين في مصر، وقضائه بمساعدة القاضي الفاضل على الخلافة الفاطمية، ومن ثم العمل على تحرير المنطقة من الفرنج.
كان القاضي الفاضل الرجل الثاني في دولة صلاح الدين، وقد اعتمد عليه في تدبير دولته، وتجهيز جيوشه، وتأمين رعاياه، ولا سيما في مصر، وفي مفاوضاته مع رجالات عصره، وفي تربية أبنائه وتدريسهم، وفي تعيين موظفي دولته. وقد دعت هذه المسؤوليات التي قام القاضي الفاضل بها إلى وصفه بأنه "كان الدولة الصلاحية".
ولم تقتصر سيرة القاضي الفاضل على إدارته وسياسته وتدبيره، بل يعدّتها إلى الأدب من نثر وشعر، وكان هذا الأدب قد كوّن طاقاته العملية ووجهها في بداية الأمر في الاتجاه الذي نبغت فيه. وهكذا، يمكن القول إنه عدا عن كون القاضي الفاضل "الدولة الصلاحية"، فإنه أديب، أي ناثر وشاعر، عزيت إليه مدرسة نثرية سميت "المدرسة الفاضلية"، أي مدرسة أسلوب القاضي الفاضل.
ولا شك أن هذا الشرف الذي أضفاه عليه معاصروه ومن تلاحم من كتاب ومؤرخين، راجع إلى كونه مؤسس قواعد أو أصول الكتابة الرسمية في عصر صلاح الدين، ناقلاً إياها من نظام خلافة إسماعيلي، إلى نظام عسكري سني. وقد ظلت كتاباته الرسمية، من سجلات وتعيينات ورسائل، نموذجاً يحتذي لأجيال تلته.
يؤرخ هذا الكتاب أحداث مرحلة عظيمة من مراحل التاريخ العربي، فيلقي الضوء على سيرة القاضي الفاضل عبد الرحيم البيساني العسقلاني، الرجل الثاني في دولة صلاح الدين ومخطط سياسته ومدبر شؤونه الداخلية وعلاقاته الدولية. ويعرض هذا الكتاب لمعارك صلاح الدين وفتوحاته، ودور القاضي الفاضل فيها جميعاً. وهو، إلى جانب ذلك، يجمع متعة السيرة إلى فائدة السياسة والتاريخ والأدب في آن واحد.
