اخترت هذا البحث وجعلت عنوانه "المتنبى بين محمود شاكر وطه حسين" وذلك لكى أقدم جهد الباحثين فى دراسة هذا الشاعر العظيم الذى كثرت الدراسات حوله فى القديم الحديث. ولكننى فى هذه الدراسة بطبيعة الحال لا يمكننى أن اتجاهل دراسات أخرى سبقت الدراستين كدراسة الأستاذ العقاد للمتنبى فى ثماني مقالات بين سنتى 1923، 1924، وهي تسبق كتاب المتنبي لمحمود شاكر الذى نشر سنة1935، وكذلك كتاب مع المتنبي لطه حسين، وكذلك كتاب عبد الوهاب عزام الصادر قبل كتاب طه حسين فى سنة 1935.
ثم تأتى دراسة الأستاذ محمد محمود شاكر بعدها بإحدى عشر عاما تقريبا وكذلك دراسة عبد الوهاب عزام، وطه حسين، ولن يقتصر بحثنا على كتابي طع حسين، ومحمود شاكر، وإنما سوف نتناول منهجهما وآراء هما بالعرض والتوضيح مستعينين بالدراسة الأخرى التى تناولت الشاعر قديما وحديثا بالقدر الذى يخدم هدفنا، وهو بيان الجهد الذى قدمه الباحثان من خلال معارفهما الحديثة، واتكائهما على الآثار الاجتماعية والنفسية والبيئية على شعر الشاعر وحياته معا.
