يعود تاريخ السينما في الهند إلى تاريخها في الغرب. ففي السابع من شهر تموز 1896 عرضت أولى أفلام السينماتوغراف للأخوين لوميير في بومباي, حيث جذبت هذه الأفلام إليها الكثير من المتفرجين. لقد تعاون العديد من الهنود في صنع أفلام ذات طبيعة وثائقية في معظمها, حتى كان عام 1913 عندما أنتج د.ج.فالك أول فيلم هندي بالكامل. كان عبارة عن مثيلوجيا تدعى راجا هاريشاندرا. كان فالك رجلاً مميزاً, تلقى تدريبه في العديد من الفنون الصناعية الجديدة وذلك قبل أن يسافر إلى لندن للحصول على المعدات وليتدرب على مهارات صناعة الفيلم. وللسينما الهندية روابط قوية مع تقاليد التمثيل المحلية, لذلك نرى أن معظم السينما الهندية هي نتاج ثقافة شعبية حديثة ظهرت خلال القرن التاسع عشر وعبارة عن هجين مرتبط بطبيعتها لأنها تجمع بين الصور الهندية التقليدية مع التكنولوجيا الصناعية. ومن بين الأشكال الجديدة للثقافة الشعبية, المسرح المدني الحديث الذي كان أحد أعظم المقدمات الهامة للسينما. وهذا الكتاب دراسة في السينما الهندية ومراحل تطورها منذ البدايات حتى الآن ويتناول المواضيع التالية: السينما الهندية, الأسلوب السينمائي من حيث المكان والأزياء, فن الإعلان, الإعلان وإيصال المعنى, ويختتم الكتاب بملحق من الصور عن الأفلام الهندية.
