لقد ظلَّ التاريخ المندائي والفكر المندائي بعيدًا نوعًا ما عن البحث المُعمَّق والتقصي ، لكون الدين المندائي غير تبشيري ، ومصادره ومراجعه كانت محدودة جدًا ومدونة باللغة المندائية الآرامية، وكان أبناء الطائفة المندائية فيما مضى كتومين وخاصة رجال الدين ، وساهمت عوامل عديدة في انطواء وانعزال هذه الطائفة ، منها هيمنة الأقوام المحيطة بهم ، وكثرة الحروب والاحتلالات المتكررة في أماكن تواجدهم ، وما خلفته هذه الغزوات من نهب وسلب وحرق للممتلكات ، وتلف الكثير من الوثائق والأدلة التاريخية ، وساهم رجال الدين المندائي في طوق العزلة المفروض على أبناء ملتهم وعلى الباحثين عن هذا الدين ، باحتفاظهم بالكتب الدينية خوفًا من الجدال الديني ، وكشف أسرار هذا الدين ، وساهم عزوف مثقفي الطائفة في الخوض في هذا المجال ، ما عدا شذرات هنا وهناك ، وكان الدافع الأساسي لذلك أن الدين المندائي ليس تبشيريًا ، والصابئة المندائيون لا يتقبلون غيرهم للدخول في دينهم ولا يتزوجون من الأديان الأخرى ولا يزوجون لها ، وبهذا انتفت المنافسة لترويج الأفكار الدينية المندائية وبقيت حبيسة بين أهلها
