يُفتتح المشهد الأول في هذه المسرحية "زمن الجراد" على صالة من صالات الدير، طاولة رهبان عليها مأكولات منوعة وحولها مقعدان. فراش حقير متروك في رحب المكان، صليب كبير عار منصوب على طول حائط "مشاكيك" بصل وثوم معلقة بعوارض السقف. حبل جرس ثخين يتهدل في زاوية. نافذة عالية معقودة ومغلقة تحتل المؤخرة. الليل عاصفة. لمعان البرق يغير المكان حيث يدوّي الرعد ممزوجاً بأصوات أزيز معدنية وأنّات، تارة مقعّرة وتارة صارخة.. جيش الجراد المرعب يزحف قدماً. قبل أن تتسلط الأضواء على مشهد صالة الدير، تظهر في زاوية من المسرح جرادتان يضيئهما شذراً لمعان البرق، إنهما مقاتلان من العصر العلمي القادم. يرتديان قبعتين مزوّدتين بهوائيات ونظارات ما تحت الأحمر للرؤية الليلية وميكروفونات وشاشة تلفاز... يجمعان ويوضبان المظلتين اللتين وصلا بهما إلى هنا، كما أجزاء من العتاد في أكياس من الكتاب، أحدهما يعطي الآخر إشارة قبل أن يختفيا في الظلام كل واحد في اتجاه دون أن نميّز لها وجهاً واضحاً. ليل عاصف والبريق يخطط في الجو ويضيء في أماكن صالة الدير. يدفع الكسيس باباً يصدر أزيزاً ويلج المكان، مبلّلاً، في يده كيس سرعان ما يلقي به جانباً. يرتدي "جبة" كاهن وفوقها صدرية وشال كبير. رداءه يذكر بلباس المقاتلين الطالبان.
وهكذا تتابع مشاهد المسرحية منطلقة حواراتها بين أبطالها في لغة رمزية ترمي إلى استحضار هموم الحاضر في سياق نقد اجتماعي سياسي للمجتمع الإنساني الراهن. ومسرحية "زمن الجراد" بما تحمله من فانتازيا هي خير معبّر عن الزحف العلمي المدمر الذي يجتاح العالم اليوم والذي زمز به "الجراد". الذي يقضي على الأخضر واليابس بما يواجهه. والمسرحية هي اقتباس مسرحي لـ"جورج الهاشم" عن ترجمة جلال الخوري لمسرحية غبريال بستاني.
