يبين الكتاب بالتفصيل سير رحالتين جاءا إلى ليبيا للتوغل في أفريقيا. وقد تناول الجزء الأول من هذا الكتاب رحلة هورنمان الألماني من القاهرة إلى مرزق، يصف مشاهداته وأحوال الطريق والأراضي التي يمر بها ومكونات التربة والجبال، ويتحدث عن الأقوام الذين يمر بهم وعاداتهم، وأحياناً يذكر شيئاً من تاريخهم، ويوضح المخاطر التي كانت تعترض المسافرين في الربع الأخير من القرن الثامن عشر. أما الجزء الثاني فقد تناول رحلة جوردون لينج والذي كان أتى إلى طرابلس لأنها من أهم المنافذ إلى داخل أفريقيا للاتجاه عبر توات في الجزائر إلى مدينة تمبكو على نهر النيجر. وقد دارت معظم رسائل لينج فيما بين طرابلس وغدامس وتوات، وما حدث له في الطريق وما رآه.
