وليكون القارئ على مقربة أكثر من موضوع الكتاب، لا بد له من معرفة الرابط بين كل من السيارة ليكساس وشجرة الزيتون والعولمة. السيارة ليكساس بالنسبة لـ"توماس ل.فريدمان"، الكاتب، رمزاً للسرعة والتقدم والرفاهية، وشجرة الزيتون رمز بها إلى الجذور والأصالة والانتماء والتمسك بالأرض والعادات والتقاليد، وهي تمثل دفء العائلة وبهجة التفرد والاعتزاز بالنفس والأمان، وفريدمان يوضح طريقة النظام الجديد (العولمة) من خلال قصص تنبض بالحياة وتعبيرات أصيلة، ويصور للقارئ الصراع بين ما رمزت إليه كل من السيارة ليكساس وشجرة الزيتون تصويراً مثيراً جذاباً، بمعنى آخر هو تصوير للتوتر بين نظام العولمة الجديد والقوى القديمة من ثقافة وجغرافيا وتقاليد ومجتمع، كما يشرح أيضاً تفصيلاً الموقف المتشدد من العولمة الذي يقفه أولئك الذين يشعرون بأن هذه العولمة تسحقهم بوحشية، ويوضح للقارئ جلياً ما يجب على الجميع فعله كي يظل هذا النظام في حالة توازن ويمكن القول بأن العصور على التوازن الصحيح بين السيارة ليكساس وشجرة الزيتون إنما يشكل الدراما العظيمة في حقبة العولمة، والعولمة هي الفكرة الأساسية التي يدور حولها كتاب فريدمان المثير الذي يدعو في قراءاته إلى التحدي. كما يرشد إلى كيفية إيجاد موطئ قدم في عالم تموج أرضيته بمعطيات حديثة تكاد تقضي على مضمون الإنسان والإنسانية.
