سن اليأس عند المرأة، هو انقطاع الطمث، بصورة نهائية، بعد الخامسة والأربعين من عمرها، وهو حالة طبيعية لأن فترة النضوج عند النساء هي بين الخامسة عشر من العمر إلى الخامس والأربعين عموماً. وترافق سن اليأس، أمراض وظيفية متعددة، مثل ارتفاع ضغط الدم، البول السكري، السمنة المفرطة، هزال الجسم والحالات النفسية المصاحبة لهذه السن.
كذلك يتعرض الرجل لتغيرات موازية لتلك التي تحصل عند المرأة، وتسمة بسن الإياس، وتصاحب هذه السن تبدلات هرمونية، تسبب ظهور بعض العوارض والعلامات.
والجدير ذكره أن هناك الكثير من البحوث، حول سن اليأس عند النساء، بينما أهمل الطب لسنوات طويلة، سن الإياس عند الرجال. وما يسعى إليه هذا البحث هو استعراض مظاهر سن اليأس عند المرأة وسن الإياس عند الرجل، وطرق المعالجة والرعاية والاهتمام بالمسنين في هذه المرحلة.
سن اليأس عند المرأة، حالة فيزيولوجية، طبيعية، ترافقها أعراض وأمراض مختلفة.
وهذه التغيرات التي تحصل سببها توقف المبيض عن إنتاج هرمون الاستروجين الأنثوي.
إذاً سن اليأس ليس حالة مرضية، حتى ترتعب منها بعض النساء، بل هي حقيقة بيولوجية، يجب أن نتعامل معها ونتفهمها في حدودها الطبيعية.
كذلك، فإن سن الإياس لدى الرجل، هو حالة موازية لتلك التي عند المرأة، وتصاحبها تبدلات في هرمون تستوستيرون الذكوري، الذي يتناقص، ويؤدي إلى ظهور عوارض وأمراض متعددة.
