بعد أن قدّم عزمي بشارة دراسة شاملة لظاهرة تنظيم الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام "داعش" ووضع الإطار العام لمشروع البحث في الجزء الأول من الكتاب، يتناول الجزء الثاني جوانب عينية من تشكّل التنظيم وتطوره وتمدده وفكره وحياة المجتمعات المحلية في ظل سيطرته؛ وذلك ضمن ثمانية فصول تتناول حالتي العراق وسورية، فضلًا عن بنيته الخطابية، والسياقات الإقليمية والدولية لصعوده وانحساره.
الجديد في هذه البحوث هو مسألة "الجهادية الكردية" التي قلما تطرق الباحثون إليها، علاوة على الخلاف بين جبهة النصرة وتنظيم "داعش"، أو انقلاب الفرع على الأصل. واللافت في النتائج التي توصل إليها بعض الباحثين في هذا الجزء هو أن "داعش" ليس استمراراً أيديولوجياً لتنظيم "القاعدة"، بل حفر لنفسه سياقاً خاصاً به ومستقلاً في الوقت نفسه.
