حظى مفهوم الكمالية بإهتمام متزايد فى التراث النفسى على مدار العقدين الأخيرين فى القرن العشرين. وبالرغم من أن التعريف الأساسى للكمالية "هو ميل الفرد إلى وضع معايير عالية إلى أقصى مدى", إلا أنه أصبح محور جدال بين الباحثين فضلاً عن أنه قد بذلت محاولات كثيرة للتمييز بين أشكال ضارة وأشكال أخرى مفيدة أو نافعة من الكمالية.
ويتحدد مفهوم الكمالية فى المقياس الحالى بأنه الرغبة فى الوصول إلى الكمال وعدم رضا الفرد عن مجهوداته وأدائه بالرغم من جودة هذا الأداء. وهذه الكمالية إما أن تكون بالتوجيه الذاتى حيث يضع الفرد لنفسه مستويات عالية ويحاول تحقيقها, أو أن تكون مكتسبة إجتماعياً حيث يكتسبها الفرد من إدراكه للمواقف الإجتماعية المحيطة به, أو أن تكون بتوجيه الأخرين حيث يضع الأخرون للفرد مستويات عالية ويحاول تحقيقها بدافع منهم.
الهدف من إعداد الأداة الحالية:
تم إعداد مقياس الكمالية كأداة للتقرير الذاتى تعطى تقديراً كمياً للكمالية سواء بالتوجيه الذاتى أو بتوجيه الأخرين أو المكتسبة إجتماعياً. والأداة الحالية قد أعدت لسد نقص واضح فى الأدوات والدراسات العربية.
