يتناول فيه المؤلف دكتور مجدي فارح مسألة الحوار المأزوم بين العرب والغرب منذ اللحظات الأولى لظهور محاولات النهضة العربية. ولن نكون أقدر من صاحب الكتاب على رسم معالم كتابه التي وردت في لوحة الغلاف حيث يقول: "يحاول هذا الكتاب الاشتغال على جملة من الصور الثقافية المتبادلة بين الذات والآخر عبر رصد الحداثة والأنوار داخل المجتمعات العربية، وهي تستعد لدخول التاريخ الحديث والقطع مع المتاريس القروسطوية، أو في بعض الصور الكولونيالية التي ابتدعتها الخيالات الغربية لإحكام الهيمنة على الشرق وجعله أسير جملة من الصور النمطية، أو في إشكاليات تعرض لها رواد النهضة من قبيل الحرية والتمدن وطرائق نقل معارف وتجارب الآخر من خلال الترجمة أو الرحلة كقنوات واصلة بين الثقافات. وقد جسدت كل هذه المحاولات أو جلها إجابات فورية عن أسئلة عربية ملحّة للمستقبل بعد أن خلخل اللقاء بالآخر بنيانها وجرح نرجسيتها وقوض مقولاتها، أو في طرح لمسائل الهوية والغيرية خاصة مع تزايد مد العولمة الثقافية. وذلك بالتركيز على السمات الأساسية التي تتحكم بنظرة كل من العرب والغرب إلى آخر تاريخيًا وثقافيًا وأنطولوجيًا، عبر محطات الالتقاء والافتراق بهدف معالجة العقبات التي ترتسم في وجه قيام حوار بناء يقرب كلًا من الآخر".
