كانت سرعة تقدم العلم الإنساني منذ أواخر القرن العشرين مذهلة، إذ حولت اللاممكن إلى ممكن وبدأت مصطلحات من قبيل "ثورة المعلومات" "تحول العالم إلى قرية صغيرة" و"العالمية" و"العولمة" تظهر في المؤلفات العلمية حتى لقد راحت الأمية، وفق المعايير العلمية تقاس على أساس من إمكان التعرف على الحاسوب وعدمه.
وقد ترك هذا التحوّل العجيب آثاره في جميع الميادين: فالعلاقات الإقتصادية بين الشعوب قد تغيرت، والعلاقات الدولية انقلبت رأساً على عقب، وتأثرت الثقافات بهذه الظاهرة بل وحتى المقولات الإعتقادية والأيديولوجية لم تبق مصونة من هذه الآثار؛ كل هذا يعد من الآثار الإيجابية للتنمية وسرعة الإتصالات إلاّ أنّه لا يمكننا أن نغفل الآثار السيئة لهذه الظاهرة التي تشكل تهديداً حقيقياً للأخلاق الإنسانية أو نتعامل معها بشكل إنفعالي؛ ومن المسلم به عند المحققين والباحثين أنّ أسلوب التعامل مع هذه الحقيقة قد طرح منذ مدة طويلة إلاّ أنّ أهمية هذا الموضوع نقلته مؤخراً من المجالات المحدودة إلى الإجتماعات العلمية في داخل البلاد وخارجها ولذا كان من الطبيعي أن تقع هذه الفكرة موقع البحث والتمحيص بين علماء العالم الإسلامي.
لهذا جاء هذا الكتاب الذي تضمن مجموعة مقالات كتبها الشيخ "محمد علي التسخيري" وألقاها في اللقاءات العلمية التي حضرها في شتّى أنحاء العالم وقد أعطيت المجموعة عنوان "الحوار مع الذات والآخر" موضّحة الموقف الإسلامي تجاه الآخرين من سائر الأديان.
