يبحث هذا الكتاب الجذور التاريخية لمشكلة "جنوب السودان"، بتطبيق منهج "التاريخ التفصيلي المرتب زمنياً ـ Chronicle"، ويغطي البحث فترة تمتد من عصور الدويلات السودانية القديمة، ثم الغزو التركي المصري للسودان، وفترة حكم الدولة المهدية، مروراً بغزو السودان في العام 1898م، والسياسات التي وضعتها دولتا الحكم الثنائي "بريطانيا ـ مصر"، ومدى تأثيرها على مستقبل السودان، نقدم للقارئ الحقائق الجغرافية والديموغرافية لجنوب السودان التي تساعد في تفهم طبيعة المشكلة، ونبحث فترات حكومات ما بعد الاستقلال الديمقراطية منها والعسكرية، والتطورات التي حدثت في المسألة سياسياً وعسكرياً، وإهدار الفرص العظيمة التي أتيحت للوصول إلى تسوية عادلة، تحافظ على وحدة السودان. لا نرغب في إعادة كتابة التاريخ، وإنما محاولة لاستقراء الأحداث بنظرة موضوعية شاملة تراعي الحقائق المثبتة، ووجهات نظر كل الفرقاء بحياد تام.
كانت حرب جنوب السودان أطول حرب أهلية شهدتها أفريقيا في تاريخها الحديث، عصفت بالاستقرار السياسي للسودان، وقضت على الأخضر واليابس، وتسببت في التخلف الاقتصادي والاجتماعي الذي لحق بالسودان وشعبه شمالاً وجنوباً، وتسببت في مأساة ومعاناة إنسانية كبيرة لشعب الجنوب، نزوحاً ولجوءاً، وموت قسري بالمجاعات والأوبئة وخارج نطاق القانون، في التاسع من يوليو 2011م، رفع علم استقلال "دولة جنوب السودان"، بعد كفاح طويل وتضحيات جسام.. انتصرت ثورة الشعب الجنوبي، وفرض إرادته في فصل دولته عن إخوته في الشمال السوداني، الذين ظلموه ولم يتركوا له مجالاً للحفاظ على هويته، أو إقناعه بقبوله شريكاً متساوياً في وطن واحد، أوجديتهم في صون حقوقه التي يفرضها تباين الثقافات والأديان والتقاليد بين الشعبين، وتمنحها له حقوق المواطنة.
