يشهد العصر الحالي ونحن في بداية الألفية الثالثة تطورات سريعة ومتلاحقة في شتى مجالات الحياة، وذلك نتيجة للثورة المعلوماتية، والتقنية، ولثورة الإتصالات، الأمر الذي يدعو إلى عملية تطوير جميع عناصر منظومة التعليم وتحديثها وتجويدها لتستجيب لمقتضيات تلك التطورات.
فقد أدى التطوّر الكبير الذي تعيشه البشرية اليوم إلى بروز العديد من التحديات التي تحتاج إلى إستراتيجيات مقننة وتخطيط محكم لمواجهتها، وهو ما جعل الكثير من المؤسسات التربوية تتجه نحو تغيير أهدافها وأهداف المواد الدراسية لا سيما المواد الحيوية التي ترتبط بالتطوير بصورة مباشرة ومنها الرياضيات.
فقد شهدت مناهج الرياضيات تطورات وتغيرات سريعة، حيث قامت كثير من الدول العالم لا سيما الدول المتقدمة مثل الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وإنجلترا واليابان بإعادة النظر في مناهج الرياضيات وإستراتيجيات وطرائق تعليمها لتفي حاجاتها وتطلعاتها نحو التقدم والرّقيّ خلال الألفية الثالثة؛ إذ يعتمد جزء كبير من نجاح الدولة على قدرة الشعب على النجاح في الرياضيات، إذ تعتمد التكنولوجيا الحديثة والتقدم العلمي على أسس رياضياتية قوية، لذلك تحتاج مناهج الرياضيات إلى إنتباه كبير من واضعي السياسات التعليمية، والممولين للسياسات التربوية، والمُدراء والمُعلمين التطلّع على مناهج الرياضيات في الدول التي تبنت مناهج الرياضيات المعاصرة للإفادة منها في تطوير مناهجها للرياضيات.
