إن المفهوم الأساسي للرياضيات الحديثة يكمن في أسلوب التدريس أكثر مما يكمن في محتويات المنهج. فالرياضيات الحديثة جمعت الرياضيات التقليدية المشتتة ونظرت إليها نظرة واحدة من زاوية نظرية المجموعات التي تنطلق من بديهيات أولية عند الطفل لتبني المفاهيم الرياضية المجردة.
ويرى القيمون على تدريس هذه المادة بأن المعلمين والأهل لا يزالون يدرسون الرياضيات الحديثة بروحية طرق الرياضيات القديمة، وهذا هو مصدر الخطأ الذي أوصل البعض إلى التنكر لفعالية الرياضيات الحديثة وصدّ أهميتها واعتبار تدريس هذه الرياضيات قد فشل وبالتالي القول بالعودة إلى الرياضيات الكلاسيكية.
