والليلةَ ها هوَ شعورُه بالوحشة يزدادُ، وهو ينظرُ إلى تلك الوجوه المتبلّدة من حوله، كم احتقرَ خوضهم فيما سمَّوه متعة! والإنسانُ إذا ذهب عقله، فماذا يبقي منه؟ وإذا تاجرَ في الأعراض والمشاعر، فما الذي يعزّ عليه؟ وحيَّره بشدّة أنه يعلم شخوصَ بعض القادمين من القاهرة؛ لكوْنهم أعضاء في ناديه، ويدركُ أن منهم مَن يؤمن بالله، ومع ذلك لم يشأ أحدُهم أن تفوته فرصةَ فسوقٍ أتيحتْ له على الرغم من إيمانه، إلى هذا الحدّ يمكن أن ينشقّ المرء في نفسه وعلى نفسه، فيتضاربُ ما يحتويه قلبُه مع ما تقترفه جوارحه، وتساءل: لو أن الله موجودٌ، فأي الفريقين أفضلُ عنده؟ فريقٌ لم يهتدِ إليه ولكنّه كره الفسوق ككُرْه المؤمنين الشيطان، أمْ فريقٌ كرِهَ الشيطان، ثمّ اتّخذه وكيلًا؟ ابتسم، فهو يعلمُ منذ زمنٍ بعيد أنّ هناك ما لا يطيق العقلُ إدراكه ولا يملك البتّ فيه، ولو استغرق عمرًا
