ونحن نشهد الهجمة لتكريس عولمة المفاهيم الغربية من أمثال: "صدام الحضارات"، و"نهاية التاريخ" وغيرهما الكثير من المفاهيم التي طوقت القرن العشرين، وأمسكت بتلابيب القرن الواحد والعشرين، ما أحوجنا إلى الدراسات الجادة، والمعمقة، لاستنهاض طاقات الأمة من جهة، وتشكيل سد منيع في وجه المفسد من الرياح الغربية.
ومجلة شؤون مشرقية، في انطلاقتها تحاول أن تضيف مدماكاً معرفياً يسد ما استطاع من ثغرات في جدار المشرق العربي.
يضم العدد الأول (صيف 2008) الذي صدر عن مركز دراسات المشرق العربي بين دفتيه عدداً من البحوث القيمة، شارك فيها مجموعة من الكتاب ذوي الاختصاص، وقد تناول محور العدد موضوع: "الطائفية الإثنية: العراق نموذجاً"، فكتب د.خليل أ؛مد خليل عن الاستدخال المذهبي والطائفي في العلاقة مع الآخر، و د.أحمد راسم النفيس عن الطائفية العنصرية، و د.عصام نعمان عن العامل الأجنبي والاحتدام الطائفي، و د.مهدي الشرع عن المكونات السياسية للطائفية في العراق، و د.حيدر أدهم الطائي عن المظاهر القانونية للطائفية في العراق.
كما شارك مجموعة من الأكاديميين والسياسيين والإعلاميين في ندوة أقامها مركز دراسات المشرق العربي في بغداد عن "الطائفية والإثنية في العراق".
وخارج إطار المحور، وتحت عنوان دراسات، كتب د.إبراهيم الجعفري عن إشكالية التغريب في الاجتماع الثقافي العربي، بينما كتب د.غسان علي العزي عن عودة روسيا إلى الشرق الأوسط.
أما افتتاحية العدد، فكانت تحت عنوان: "المشرق. أولاً... دائماً" لرئيس التحرير الدكتور علي المؤمن، حاول فيها أن يضع النقاط على الحروف، وأن يتلمس مواطن الألم في مشرقنا العربي توخياً لتشخيص الداء ومن ثم توصيف العلاج.
في العدد أيضاً وفي باب إضاءات، نقرأ لنجيب الماجدي: قراءة في كتاب من "المذهبية إلى الطائفية" ولآمال شمص: قراءة في "كتاب الإثنية والدولة: الأكراد في العراق". بينما كتب مدير التحرير علي سعد تحت عنوان "شجون مشرقية" عن المراوحة بين زفير الحروب وشهيق القتلى. في العدد أيضاً، إضافة إلى مجموعة تقارير، ملخصات للموضوعات باللغة الإنجليزية.
