قد يبدو أن كتاباً عن الفلسفة الإنجليزية، من تأليف كاتب ألماني، ليس أفضل الكتب التي يمكن أن تترجم في هذا الموضوع. غير أن هذا الإزدواج ذاته من أهم ميزات هذا الكتاب: ذلك لأن مجرد كون مؤلف الكتاب ينتمي إلى بلد غير ذلك الذي كتب عنه، يتيح له النظر إلى الأمور بطريقة نقدية موضوعية يصعب أن تتوافر فيمن يكتب عن فلسفة بلاده هو، وذلك لأسباب واضحة فالمؤلف هنا محايد لا ينتمي إلى أي مذهب من المذاهب التي يعرض لها أو إلى أية مدرسة يؤرخ لها، فضلاً عن أن السمات العامة للتفكير الإنجليزي تظهر له بوضوح أكثر مما يمكن أن تظهر به لواحد من ممثلي هذا التفكير ذاته. هذا من الناحية العامة، أما من الناحية الخاصة فإن للمؤلف علماً غزيراً بموضوع الفلسفة الإنجليزية على التخصيص، بل إنا نستطيع أن نقول إنه كرس حياته كلها للتأريخ لها، ومن هذا الإنتاج الهام المتخصص، يتضح لنا أن المؤلف أصلح من يكتب في هذا الموضوع، وفضلاً عن ذلك إن الكتاب، كما يقول المؤلف في مقدمته، يمثل محاولة للتفاهم بين الألمان والإنجليز في وقت كان البلدان فيه أحوج ما يكونان إليه.
