قد يبدو أن كتاباً عن الفلسفة الإنجليزية، من تأليف كاتب ألماني، ليس أفضل الكتب التي يمكن أن تترجم في هذا الموضوع. غير أن هذا الازدواج ذاته من أهم ميزات هذا الكتاب: ذلك لأن مجرد كون مؤلف الكتاب ينتمي إلي بلد غير ذلك الذي كتب عنه، يتيح له النظر إلي الأمور بطريقة نقدية موضوعية يصعب أن تتوافر فيمن يكتب عن فلسفة بلاده هو، وذلك لأسباب واضحة فالمؤلف هنا محايد لا ينتمي إلي أي مذهب من المذاهب التي يعرض لها أو إلي أية مدرسة يؤرخ لها، فضلا عن أن السمات العامة للتفكير ذاته. هذا من الناحية العامة، أما من الناحية الخاصة فإن للمؤلف علما غزيراً بموضوع الفلسفة الإنجليزية علي التخصيص، بل إنا نستطيع أن نقول إنه كرس حياته كلها للتأريخ لها.
علي أن محاولة المؤلف أن يكون موضوعياً تماماً في بحثه للفلسفة الإنجليزية لم تكن في رأينا ناجحة كل النجاح، وما أظن أن أي مؤلف غيره كان قادراً علي أن يحرز في مضمار نجاحا أكبر مما أحرز. فرغم حرصه الشديد علي النزاهة والموضوعية، يستطيع القارئ المدقق أن يلمس مظهرين للتحيز، يعبران دون شك عن ميول شخصية لا يستطيع أي كاتب أن يخفيها تماماً مهما بذل في ذلك من جهد: الأول هو حرصه علي إظهار أهمية تأثير الفلسفة الألمانية في الفكر الإنجليزي، والثاني هو ميله إلي الطريقة التأملية الخاصة في التفكير الفلسفي، وإلي تشييد المذاهب الفكرية الشاملة، في مقابل الطريقة الجزئية الواقعية في التفكير، والتماس الحلول الجزئية المدفقة مع تجنب الإفراط في التعميم.
