أفكار حول الموت والأزليّة هو إنكار صريح للاعتقاد المسيحي بالخلود الشخصي، نداء من أجل الإقرار بالنوعية التي لا تنضب للحياة الوحيدة التي لدينا، وهجوم ساخر على مواقف ونفاقيات اللاهوتيين المحترفين في ألمانيا القرن التاسع عشر. لقد زعم محرر العمل أنه أمضى وقتاً صعباً لإقناع المؤلف بالسماح له بنشره؛ وكان لتحفّظ المؤلف مبرراته أيضاً، لأنه بسبب الغضب الذي تسبّب به، أصبح هذا الكتاب عقبة رئيسة أمام محاولات لودفيغ فويرباخ للحصول على الأستاذية من إحدى الجامعات الألمانية. وعلى الرغم من ذلك، لم يجد أنّ هذا الاستبعاد مأساوياً على نحو خاص. كان قد مضى عليه يدرّس كمحاضر لمدة سنتين في جامعة إيرلنغن في الوقت الذي ظهر فيه الكتاب، وأثناءها كان احتقاره موجهاً إلى عالم الباحث المحترف بقدر ما هو موجّه إلى عالم اللاهوتي: "ثلاثة أشياء لا أحب أن أكونها: عرّاف عجوز، كاتب هزيل/ في الأكاديمية، وأخيراً تقي"(ص 205).
