يضم هذا الكتاب أول دراسة تاريخية مقارنة من نوعها ينجزها باحث عربي حول الموضوعين السفارديمي والموريسكي، اعتمدت المصادر الأصلية باللغات العربية والإسبانية والعبرية ولغات أخرى، لتحيط بواقعة طرد وتهجير المنتمين إلى الفئتين الموريسكية والسفارديمية من الأندلس.
تمكن الباحث من الوصول إلى الأرشيفات ومراكز البحث المختلفة، خصوصاً في إسبانيا وأفاد من الوثائق الضرورية وقام بالكثير من الزيارات الميدانية لمسرح دراسته، بين عالمي الطرد والتوطين.
وتذهب الدراسة إلى التأكيد على أن الملكين الكاثوليكيين وإن فتحا الباب للطرد على أساس فكر إستئصالي ديني، فإنهما سُرعان ما حولا سياستهما عبر القرارات الملحقة التي تُخير السفارديم بين إعتناق المسيحية والطرد، إلى عملية صهر قسري للأقلية.
وتبرهن الدراسة في إطار المقارنة بين مُجتمعي الطرد والتوطين على أن الإختلاف الأساسي المُفسر لفشل عملية إدماج الأقليتين في المجتمع الإسباني ونجاحه في المُجتمعات المغاربية مُرتبط بعاملين جوهريين: يتعلقان بالهوية، وعامل الزمن، وتخلص إلى أن قلق الهوية الذي عاشهُ المجتمع الإسباني خصوصاً في القرنين الخامس عشر والسادس عشر يعتبر سبباً رئيسياً في تراجيديا الطرد، قلق عاشتهُ المجتمعات المُعاصرة وكان سبباً في كثير من المآسي التاريخية المُشابهة: كمأساة الأرمن مع بداية القرن العشرين، والتوتسي سنة 4991 أو مُسلمي سربرنيتسا سنة 5991، وهو إلى حد اليوم يُمثل مُشكلاً مؤرقاً للمُجتمعات غير القادرة على إدارة إختلافاتها الإثنية، اللغوية والدينية.
الدراسة تنبهنا إلى أن أصوات برنالداث وخايمي بليدا وغيرهم ممن تزعموا في إسبانيا حركة طرد المورسكيين راحت تعلو من جديد في عالمنا، وأننا نسقط في فخ "الهوية القاتلة" التي تختزل هويتنا في مكون واحد، يرفضُ ما خالفهُ ويحاربهُ مُحاولاً إستئصاله، دائماً من خلال أحكام إلهية وبإسم الطُهرية، النقاء أو الإغتسال من "نجاسة" الهويات الكونية الدخيلة.
وقد حاز الباحث عن جدارة كبيرة على جائزة ابن بطوطة للدراسات في الأدب الجغرافي في دورتها الحادية عشرة.
