شهد الأردنَ، بين عامي 1997 و 2011، تحوّلات كبيرة في البنية السياسيّة والإقتصاديّة أثارت جدالات بين النخب المنتمية إلى ما وصف بالليبراليّة الجديدة من جهة، وبين صفوف واسعة من المحافظين المخضرمين والإعلاميّين والإصلاحيّين الّذين عايشوا عهد الإنتقال من الملكيّة الثالثة (الملك حسين) إلى الملكية الرابعة (الملك عبد الله الثاني).
لقد تحوّلت تلك المرحلة إلى ميدان إختبار للعديد من السياسات والنظريّات حيث عمل الليبراليّون الجدد، من خلال وصولهم إلى مواقع السلطة والنفوذ، على التصدّي للحريّات الإعلاميّة (التعديلات المستمرّة لقانون المطبوعات)، وإضعاف الولاية العامة للحكومة بإنشاء اللجان والمؤسسات الموازية، كما لعبوا دوراً أساسياً في موضوع الخصخصة (بيع أسهم القطاع العامّ في الشركات الكبرى، الفوسفات، البوتاس، الشركات الخدميّة)، وفي ملفّات الإستثمار الأجنبيّ (قوانين جذب المستثمرين المتعدّدة والمتناقضة)، الّتي استقطبت الإشاعات وإتّهامات الفساد.
على جوانب هذه الجدالات والمواجهات كان للصحافة ووسائل الإعلام الوطنيّة دور في تغذيتها وإثارة الأسئلة بشأن ملاءمة هذه السياسات للمصالح الوطنية.
في هذا المجال قامت صحيفة (العرب اليوم)، الّتي رأست تحريرها لمدّة ثلاثة عشر عاماً، بفتح العديد من الملفّات الرئيسيّة الّتي ثار حولها الجدل، وتداولها الرأي العام بإهتمام كبير ولا يزال حتى يومنا هذا.
هذا الكتاب جزء من سيرتي الذاتية كسياسيّ أثناء وجودي في الحكومة، وكصحفيّ أثناء عملي رئيساً لتحرير (العرب اليوم) - بإستثناء عام 1999 - كما أنها في الوقت نفسه، سيرة ذاتيّة للصحيفة وتدوين لمواقف وأعمال قدّم، من خلالها، بعض الزملاء مآثر إعلاميّة بما أظهروا من مهنيّة عالية، وجرأة في إبداء الرأي، وصبر في متابعة الملفّات الّتي نشرت، ومواجهة التحدّيات التي اعترضت سعيهم للحصول على المعلومات وكشف الحقيقة.
