تمثل الجغرافيا البيئية ذلك البعد الثالث لإظهار التركيب التحليلي لوجهي علم الجغرافيا (الأرض والإنسان)، حيث تقوم برصد وتحليل تلك التفاعلات المتبادلة بين الإنسان ومحيطة البيئي لتحديد الخصائص البيئية للمكان، فهي تبحث أسباب ظهور المشكلة وتقوم بقياس مدى تأثير وأبعاد تلك المشكلة ثم تضع تصور لحل هذه المشكلة، وذلك باستخدام الأساليب التحليلية لتقييم ذلك الحضور الإنساني على البيئة، وقياس مردود النشاط البشري في مجال الأرض الحيوي.
يغطي الإطار المكاني للبحث في هذا الكتاب حدود منطقة حلوان جنوبي محافظة القاهرة، تلك المنطقة الصحراوية السهلية ذات الشهرة العالمية، وذلك فيما قبل مرحلة التوطن الصناعي التي غيرت– بدرجة شديدة جدًا– نوعية البيئة ارتباطًا بتغير الوظيفة الاقتصادية، حتى أصبحت منطقة حلوان بمثابة منخفض جوي دائم للتلوث الصناعي المستمر، يؤثر في نطاقها ونطاق المناطق المحيطة بها في الجنوب والغرب حسب محصلة اتجاهات الريح السائدة.
يوصى الكتاب بأن تحضير المكان للصناعة بدون أخذ الاعتبارات البيئية، كبعد هام ومؤثر في المحيط الحيوي بما في ذلك الصناعة ذاتها، يأتي بنتائج وخيمة ومشاكل اقتصادية حادة، تنعكس في أنظمة المكان الأربعة: اليابس، والغلاف المائي والغازي والحيوي الطبيعي؛ مما يجعل العيش فيه صعبًا بل مخاطرة (على المدى المتوسط والطويل) بصحة الإنسان وممتلكاته.
