The new Meriam-Webster Dictionary is the fourth in the line of Meriam-Webster paperback dictionaries which began in 1970. It is firmly based on previous editions, but it also drains much new information from Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, which was published after the appearance of the last paperback edition> Every entry and every section has been reexamined so that this new paperback edition offers much that is new while preserving the best aspects of vocabulary. It is followed by several sections that dictionary users have long found helpful; a list of foreign words and phrases that often occur in English texts but that have not yet become part of the English vocabulary; a list of nations of the world; a list of places in the United States having 16,500 or more inhabitants, with a preceding editions. The core of the English vocabulary is to be found in the 60,000 entries included in this book, and every definition is based on examples of actual use found among the more than 13,500,000 citations in the Meriam-Webster files. The heart of the new Meriam-Webster Dictionary is the A-Z summary by states; a similar list of places in Canada, with a summary by provinces and territories; and a section devoted to widely used signs and/symbols. The A-Z vocabulary is preceded by an explanatory notes section that should be read carefully by every user of the dictionary. An understanding of the information contained in these notes will add markedly to the satisfaction and pleasure that come from looking into the pages of a dictionary.
