ليس هذا كتاباً من كتب سير الأعلام، أي أنه ليس سرداً أدبياً أو تاريخياً، لحياة المغني الشعبي العظيم، الشيخ إمام عيسي، الذي لمع نجمه في مصر والعالم العربي لأكثر من 25 عاماً وأصبح بحق، فنان الشعب وخلفية سيد درويش العظيم، بأغانيه وأناشيده وألحانه ومواقفه الصلبة في مواجهة كل أشكال الإغراء والتخويف والقمع.
وعندما بدأت كتابة صفحات هذا الكتاب لم يكن في نيتي أن يكون كتاباً متكاملاً شاملاً عن الشيخ إمام من جميع الزوايا والجوانب، بل كان قصاري ما آمل فيه، أن يأتي معبراً عن رؤيتي الشخصية، وتسجيلاً أميناً لذكرياتي الخاصة عن الشيخ إمام، وعن تأثري الشخصي بأغانيه، وتأثيره في أبناء جيلي وعصري من شباب الجامعة المصرية في زمن الحركة الطلابية "الثورية" العظيمة في السبعينيات.
وكنت أيضاً أطمح من خلال ما كتبته من صفحات بدأتها كحديث للذكريات اتسعت فيما بعد لتصبح عدداً من الفصول أو المحطات توقفت أمامها واحدة بعد أخري، أن أقدم للقارئ جزءاً من تاريخ الحركة الوطنية المصرية من خلال خصوصية ظاهرة "الشيخ إمام- أحمد فؤاد نجم" وعلاقتها بالحركة الجماهيرية الطلابية والشعبية في مصر، وأن أضع الظاهرة في إطار عصرها، وأناقش أبعادها وتضاريسها وما أنتهت إليه اليوم.
وفي الصفحات التي سيطالعها القارئ هنا سيجد علاقة متلازمة بين الذاتي والموضوعي، وبين السياسي والفني، وبين الماضي والحاضر، وبين التأملات الشخصية والتحليل الذي يلزم نفسه بالبحث في الحقائق وتسليط الأضواء علي بعض ما تجنب الكثيرون من قبل الاقتراب منه، تفاديا لما يمكن أن ينتج عنه من حرج، بين الغناء كفن وكتابة القصيدة الشعبية كشكل خاص من أشكال التعبير، وبين التحريض والهجاء السياسي خلال ما يعتبر بحق، "عصر الثورة والغضب".
