فبسبب تقدم البحث العلمي وتطور وسائل قياسه تم التوصل إلى قاعدة علمية يمكن بها الحكم على الفرد وقياس سلوكه، وبالتالي تصنيف البشر على هيئة مجموعات كل مجموعة تشترك في بعض السمات والخصائص التي تميزها عن غيرها وهذا يمكن الحكم على هؤلاء الفرد بأن شخصيتهم إنطوائية وغيرهم عدوانية وغيرهم سلبية أو إيجابية وهكذا.
وقد تجتمع عدة شخصيات في بعض الأعراض وتكون أنموذج لأحد أنماط الشخصية وتميزها عن غيرها، وقد احتلت الشخصية مكانة هامة في الدراسات والبحوث النفسية، ويصدق هذا القول في حال دراسة الشخصية السوية والشخصية المضطربة، وقد ساعد تأكيد هذه المكانة عدد من العوامل من بينها النظر إلى السلوك على أنه يحصل لشخصية تعمل من حيث وحدة متكاملة وفيها كل ما تنطوي عليه من عناصر ومركبات ودوافع وقدرات.
