هذا الكتاب مشاركة علمية من الحافظ أبي الخير محمد بن عبد الرحمن السخاوي في صورة جزء حديثي فقهي، قسمه إلى مقدمة وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة.
أما المقدمة ففي: ضبط الشطرنج والتعريف به في اللغة وذكر أول من وضعه، وجاء به إلى العرب، وعن تضعيف رقعة الشطرنج وسبب وضعه.
ثم الباب الأول: ذكر فيه الأحاديث المسندة، وتكلم عليها وبين أنها لا تخلو من ضعف واعتلال.
ثم الباب الثاني: ذكر فيه من ذم الشطرنج وكرهه من الصحابة (رضي الله عنه).
ثم الباب الثالث: القسم الأول: فيهن كرهه وذمه من التابعين (رحمهم الله). ثم القسم الثاني من الباب نفسه: فيمن لعبه أو لم ير به بأساً من التابعين.
ثم خاتمة كانت في مقامين: المقام الأول: ذكر فيه الخلاف العالي في حكم الشطرنج عند الأئمة الأربعة، وساق أدلة الذين يرون التحريم والذين يرون الإباحة أو الكراهة وأورد الاعتراضات والإيرادات والأجوبة عليها من المختلفين.
المقام الثاني: في عدالة لاعبه، حيث ذكر الخلاف العالي في ذكر بين الأئمة في عدالة لاعبه، ومن قيدها ومن أطلقها وما جرى مجرى ذلك.
ثم ختم كتابه بتتمة، في ما قيل من الكلمات الأنيقة والألفاظ الرشيقة نظماً ونثراً وهجواً وفخراً في الشطرنج.
