يقول المؤلف في مقدمة الكتاب: "كان الباعث على تأليفه قصد الإرشاد لمن ليس له عنه انفصال؛ ليقف على ما ورد فيه من الأخبار والنصوص فليس مع النص احتمال, ويطلع على أن الأكثر حرموه ممن له على جل العلوم اشتمال, فينفك عن الإدمان له ويتزود للارتحال, ويعدل إلى التشبه بأهل الخير والورع فيما يصدر عنه من الأقوال والأفعال, ويصرف قريحته لدقيق العلم ويلقي ما عنده من النخال, ويعتمد في استرواحه مطالعة الأخبار والمغازي ورقائق الأشعار التي أحلى من الزلال".
وقد رتبه مؤلفه على أبواب وفصول, واستفتحه بمقدمة أظهرت نفائس محاسنه في أنواع من البراعة مغشاة. وأما الأبواب: فالأول فيما يذكر فيه من الأحاديث المسندة, وإن كانت لا تخلو من ضعف واعتلال. والثاني فيما جاء عن السادة الصحابة الحائزين لمزيد من العلو والاتصال. والثالث فيما جاء عن أئمة التابعين وأتباعهم من الفحول الأبطال, وفي كل منها قسمين ليس للطالب عنهما انتقال. وأما الخاتمة: ففي حكمه عند سائر الأئمة وما أبدوه من بحث واحتمال, مما تقصر الهمم عن مثله وليس للعقول وراءه مجال.
