جمعت في هذا الكتاب الأعمال الكبرى التي حدثت في المجال الفكري الحضارات القديمة لبلاد ما بين النهرين وكنعان والتي لا تستطيع صفحات هذا الكتاب أن تحيط بها جميعاً وبعظمتها. والكتاب يضم بين دفتيه ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول يتضمن أوائل الفكر الديني البابلي، التي ترقى كتاباتها على ألواح من الفخار إلى الألف الرابع قبل الميلاد، وهو تاريخ بداية الكتابة في بلاد ما بين النهرين. كما يتضمن نظرة السوري القديم إلى الكون والحياة، فتشرح لنا الأساطير كيف ولماذا خلق الإنسان وعلاقة الآلهة بالمخلوق الجديد مع تحديد مهمته على الأرض. وفي هذا الفصل تظهر فكرة المذهب الانفرادي التي حدثت أيام حكم الملك الأموري حمورابي حيث أصبح الإله مردوخ، إله بابل، بعد أن تحولت إليه جميع القوى الإلهية. وهذا المذهب إنما هو تطور للمذهب التعددي الذي هو أيضاً تطور واضح توحيدياً على لسان أبي الأنبياء إبراهيم الخليل. ويتضمن هذا الفصل العديد من المواضيع الهامة مثل سلوك الإنسان السيء ومعاقبته من قبل الآلهة كما يتضمن النواميس الكونية ومواضيع أخرى. أما الفصل الثاني فيتضمن أهم الأساطير السورية وهي: ملحمة جلجامش وإيتانا وأدبا. كما يتضمن مدارات إلهة الخصب عشتار والصلوات الطقسية التي كانت تقام في بابل، وكذلك يتضمن ملحمة سري مشري شلقان (أيوب التوراة) التي انتحلتها كتبة التوراة. ويرى القارئ باباً في أدب الحوار بين متعبد وشكاك وبين سيد وخادمه. ويتحدث الفصل الثالث عن تاريخ اكتشاف مدينة أوغاريت الكنعاني كما يتضمن أسماء الآلهة الكنعانية والنصوص الدينية مع ذكر علاقتها بالتوراة.
