التَّضمينُ إشرابُ لفظٍ معنى لفظٍ، فيُعطى حُكْمَه، وفائدتُهُ أَنْ تؤدْيَ كلمةً معنى كلمتَيْنِ.
قال ابن جنْي في كتابه الجهيز "الخصائص": ومِنَ الحمل على المعنى بابٌ واسعٌ لطيفٌ، وهو إتّصالُ الفعل بحرفٍ ليس مِمَّا يتعدَّى به؛ ويُسَمَّى هذا الضَّرْبُ مِن الحمل التَّضمين.
ووجدتُ في اللَّغة من هذا الفنْ شيئاً كثيراً لا يكاد يُحاطُ به، ولعلَّه لو جُمع أكثره لا جميعُه لجاء كتاباً ضخماً، وقد عرفْتَ طريقَه، فإذا مر بك منه شيءً فتقبله وتأنْسْ به؛ فإنْه فصلٌ من العربيَّة لطيف، حَسَنٌ يدعو إلى الأُنْسِ بها.
