في هذا الكتاب ستبعث أمامنا الحياة اليومية لعائلة تركية متدينة في البلقان، في نهاية السنوات الأخيرة للامبراطورية العثمانية وقبل الإبادة الجماعية للأتراك، والسنوات الأولى لامرأة شابة عاشت بمفردها في استانبول أثناء احتلال اليونان للأناضول، ودراستها في قسم الفلسفة بدار الفنون بعد تخرجها من المدرسة الأمريكية (روبرت كوليج) وكل ذكريات "بلقيس حليم" واحدة واحدة، كما نلتقي بمغامرات الاعتياد على الجمهورية الجديدة بحلوها ومرها.
في هذا الكتاب نجد ثورة فخذ الخنزير المملح في مدرسة "تشامليجة" للبنات، وحفظة القرآن المتعقبين للنساء، والرحلات الجوية في سماء إستانبول والتي كانت تضم الرجال والنساء معًا، وبالطبع الشرطة السرية التي كانت موجودة، وعمل هذه السيدة وسط الرجال في "هارفارد" في سنوات الحرب العالمية الثانية، واشتغالها بمهنة الطب النفسي لمدة نصف قرن في مستشفيات الأمراض العقلية بأمريكا.
كما سنرى سيادة الجنود الأمريكيين في أنقرة في سنوات الحرب الباردة، ومغامرات الشيوعيين الأتراك في "موسكو" والتي تقدم العبرة لنا.
"جودندوز وصاف" مؤلف كتابي "مدح جهنم" وعمق الجنة، والذي عرفه أورخان باموق بأنه أكثر كتابنا الأتراك إحساسًا وحرية يمزج في هذه المرة ذكرياته مع أمه بالتاريخ.
